Shauna Anderson Reflects on Helping Families Navigate Life After Loss on Lawyers Who Care

Shauna Anderson on Lawyers Who Care

Irvine, Calif. — When most people think about estate planning, they think about legal documents, trusts, and financial assets. But during a recent appearance on the Lawyers Who Care podcast, Law Stein Anderson LLP partner Shauna R. Anderson explained that her work is often much more personal than that.

Hosted by Andrew Samalin, CFP®, the podcast highlights attorneys who go above and beyond for their clients. During the conversation, Anderson reflected on the experiences that led her to trust and estate law and shared how she helps families navigate some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

Anderson’s desire to become an attorney began early. Inspired by a family member who practiced law, she saw the profession as an opportunity to make a meaningful impact. But it was during law school, while working at a disability rights legal clinic representing children with learning disabilities, that she found the deeper purpose that would shape her career.

“Every day that I stepped into that office, I knew I was impacting those kids in a positive way,” Anderson said during the interview.

Although her career ultimately took her in a different direction, the underlying motivation remained the same. Today, she works primarily with seniors and families facing complex estate, trust, and probate matters, often during periods of significant transition.

One story she shared illustrates just how life-changing those situations can be.

After losing her husband of more than 50 years, one client suddenly found herself responsible for handling the family’s finances for the first time. Throughout their marriage, her role had been raising their children while her husband managed the financial side of their lives.

As the trust administration process unfolded, she discovered something she never expected: the family owned approximately $30 million in real estate assets.

For Anderson, the challenge wasn’t simply helping the client locate assets and complete legal paperwork. It was helping someone who was grieving the loss of a spouse while simultaneously stepping into an entirely new role and set of responsibilities.

“We help people in one of the most difficult times that they’re facing,” Anderson said.

The conversation also explored practical lessons for families hoping to avoid future conflict. Anderson encouraged people to do more than simply sign estate planning documents. She emphasized the importance of talking openly with family members, educating trusted individuals about their wishes, and ensuring loved ones understand where important information can be found when it is needed.

She also offered advice for trustees, stressing that transparency and communication can often prevent misunderstandings before they become disputes.

“When you are open and communicating to the people that are benefiting from the trust, there’s less question running through their mind,” Anderson explained.

Throughout the interview, a common theme emerged: successful estate planning is not just about transferring assets. It is about preparing people for the responsibilities, decisions, and life changes that often follow.
