Turning the Microphone Around: Meet Gino Barrica

Before joining Law Stein Anderson, Gino Barrica spent part of law school behind the microphone as the award-winning host of Talkadelphia, interviewing artists, athletes, politicians, and other notable guests throughout the Philadelphia area. Now that Gino has joined our team, we thought it was only fitting to turn the microphone around and let him answer a few questions of his own.
1. You grew up in the Philippines before building your legal career in the United States. How has that journey shaped who you are, both personally and professionally?
Growing up in the Philippines taught me to look at things from different perspectives. Everything was so different over there. You realize that what you see every day is probably very different from what someone else sees. I also learned to be very grateful. There was a lot of poverty all around, but it wasn’t because people weren’t hardworking. Sometimes people just don’t have the same opportunities.
2. During law school, you earned awards in both Trial Advocacy and Cyberprivacy Law while also hosting an award-winning podcast. Looking back, what experience challenged you the most—and what did it teach you?
I went to the evening program at Temple Law School, which meant I had to do four years of law school instead of three. For the most part, I would work all day, take classes in the evening, and then I might have trial team practice after my classes until late at night. Even with that packed schedule, I found time to produce the podcast every week just to do something different that had nothing to do with law school. The experience wasn’t easy, but it taught me that a lot of things worthwhile don’t come easy.
3. Throughout your career, you’ve represented individuals, businesses, and corporations in a variety of legal matters. What qualities do you think every client deserves in an attorney?
As an attorney, you handle so many files and cases over the years that it’s easy to forget that, for your client, this might be their first time ever going through the legal process. Every client deserves an attorney that can put themselves in their client’s shoes and understand that a lot of the things that attorneys deal with on a daily basis can be utterly confusing, life changing, or devastating for a client.
4. How has becoming a husband and father influenced your perspective on life and work?
We started our family relatively recently, so I am really cherishing the experience. Having two young boys definitely keeps me active and on my toes. But I’m also reminded of what my priorities are every day.
5. Outside the courtroom, what are some of the things that bring you the most joy?
Having two boys under five, getting some sleep probably brings me the most joy. I’ve always been a big comic book and sports fan, so I love that I can go to comic conventions or sports games like I used to. But now I get to do it with my kids. It’s like a whole new experience!
6. You’ve interviewed a lot of interesting people over the years. If you could sit down for one more conversation—with anyone, living or historical—who would it be, and why?
Being a big Spider-Man fan, Stan Lee would have been a good interview. It would have been great to hear about the story behind the creation of such iconic characters.
We hope you enjoyed getting to know Gino a little better. We’re excited to welcome him to Law Stein Anderson and look forward to the knowledge, perspective, and commitment he’ll bring to our clients.
