Certified Specialist by The California State Bar
The California State Bar certifies attorneys as specialists who have exceeded the standard licensing requirements. The program provides a method for attorneys to earn the designation of certified specialists in particular areas of law to increases public protection and encourage attorney competence. Such areas include estate planning, trust administration, and probate administration. The program pioneered a groundbreaking approach in the United States and served as a blueprint for similar initiatives in other states for certifying legal specialists.
The general requirements to become a certified specialist include:
- Passing an examination in the legal specialty area
- Having practiced law continuously for at least five years, spending at least 25 percent of the time dedicated to the specialty area
- Completion of continuing education in the specialty area greater than that required of general licensees of the State Bar
- Extensive and diverse expertise in the specialized field by successfully handling various cases and matters within that area
- Positive assessments from fellow attorneys and judges acquainted with the lawyer’s expertise in the specific field of law
